With the advancement in computer technology and wireless communication, technology is now affording a wide array of possibilities to its users. Ellen Wagner of Macromedia noted “The mobile revolution is finally here... the evidence of mobile penetration and adoption is irrefutable: cell phones, PDAs (personal digital assistants), MP3 players, portable game devices, handhelds, tablets, and laptops abound. No demographic is immune from this phenomenon...”
According to O’Malley et al (2003) mobile learning (m-learning) is “any sort of learning that happens when the learner is not at a fixed, predetermined location, or learning that happens when the learner takes advantage of the learning opportunities offered by mobile technologies”. E-learning is the process by which skills and knowledge are transferred via Information and communication technologies (ICT), hence the electronic support of learning.
Advantages of smart phones and other mobile technologies in education
1. Mobile technologies are current and suitable for the new generation of learners (digital natives). I believe that the purpose of school is to teach people how to survive in the real world. Warlick (2009) posits “The purpose of education is to appropriately prepare our children for their future...” How can we then prepare digital natives for their future without digital tools?
