In recent years it has become popular to set up temporary outdoor ice rinks in picturesque locations around London. Ice-skating is becoming a favourite activity for many to indulge in during the festive season. Most rinks are open during December and January so the public can celebrate Christmas with family and friends on the ice.

Somerset House

The winter ice rink has been a feature for several years now. Set within the central courtyard of this magnificent 18th century neoclassical building, the ice rink is open throughout the day and into the evening from mid-November well into January. Somerset House is well-situated between the Strand and the River Thames, within easy reach of Charing Cross and Waterloo rail stations.

The ice rink offers skating lessons and ice-dancing lunchtime workouts in association with the English National Ballet on selected days. Cupcakes and sweeties are sold alongside jewellery at the Tiffany Tuck Shop; and there is a rink-side skate lounge offering refreshments. Friday and Saturday evenings are DJ nights with a number of top names lined up to entertain skaters.
