There are three major cultures in Panama, and each is partial to a type of instrument. The Kuna are attracted to the idiophones and aerophones, instruments that produce noise due to vibrations and air, respectively.

African Americans are partial to the membranophones, instruments whose sounds are produced by a vibrating membrane. Those of European descent are partial to Spanish derived chordophones, instruments that produce noise because a chord is being vibrated or plucked.

Idiophones

There are several idiophones used within Panama including: maracas, guiros, castanets, jingle bells, and vejigas. Maracas are wooden with beans/beads inside that make noise when shaken. Guiros are wooden instruments with ridges along the sides that produced sound when scraped (generally with a stick).
