Whether it be a love of science-fiction, fascination of technology, or intrigue of the future, there has always been various ways of mimicking the style and phrasing of robots or androids. Just as popular music has morphed and transformed over the decades, different styles of robotic intonation have changed with the times too.
Beginnings: Vocoders
The most common and widely used technique was that of the vocoder, a system originally created in the 1930s for telecommunications, where speech could be encrypted before transmission. In more recent times however, the vocoder as both hardware and software have been used as an electronic musical instrument.
