Crisis means different things to different people. The Collins English Dictionary defines a crisis as a “situation in which something or someone is affected by one or more very serious problems.“

A crisis could produce emotional, physical or behavioural distress. Various situations could trigger it, such as mental health problems, addictions, relationship, domestic violence, abuse, financial stress, thoughts of harming themselves, depression or loneliness.

When someone is distressed, their ability to function is reduced. They should be commended for reaching out to communicate. Confidential crisis lines generally operate 24/7, in various cities worldwide and are staffed with trained volunteers from all backgrounds and cultural diversity. Crisis line workers do not give advice; they offer support and a safe place to talk.
