Restaurants in this famous rug-weaving village tend to be home-based dining rooms and the domain of talented, multi-generational women -- mothers, daughters, aunts, cousins -- who put out a few tables, cover them with colorful cloth, and open for business. What they serve is authentic, delicious and affordable.

You might be an independent day traveler who arrives in the village by mid- to late morning after a typical 9:30 a.m. Oaxaca breakfast. The taxi you hire (about 250 pesos for a 25 minute trip) or bus you take (10 pesos for a one-hour trip) drops you off at or near the "first on your list" weaving studio. (Hopefully, you choose to visit weavers who only work in natural dyes because of the exquisite beauty and health advantages.)

Hungry? Eat Before 4 p.m.

After browsing home studio workshops and discussing the intricate, multi-step natural dyeing process, you stop in at the community museum, take photos of the extraordinary 17th century church and go around back to see the Zapotec temple ruins. It is now somewhere between noon and 4 p.m., depending on how fast you move and the territory you want to cover. Your stomach is growling and it's time for lunch.
